IMAGE COMPRESSION GUIDE

How image compression works by format

The tool keeps the source format and dimensions while re-encoding the image. JPG and WebP use quality settings; PNG uses lossless or colour-reduction optimisation.
JPG

Photos and general images

Quality controls reduce size. Repeated compression can accumulate visible loss.

PNG

Transparent and sharp graphics

Use lossless optimisation or colour reduction. Strong settings may alter gradients.

WebP

Static web images

Transparency is retained while quality is adjusted. Animated WebP is not supported.

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Practical criteria for judging compression

Judge photos by artefacts as well as file size

JPG and WebP can introduce blocks or banding in skin, skies, and gradients. Inspect the result at larger zoom instead of relying on the size alone.

Separate lossless PNG from colour optimisation

Lossless optimisation preserves pixels but may save little space. Colour optimisation can reduce more, with a possibility of subtle colour changes.

Avoid recompressing files that are already small

Recompressing an already efficient image may reduce quality without a meaningful size benefit. Check whether the original was kept.

Repeated lossy compression accumulates damage

Saving the same image repeatedly as JPG or WebP compounds compression loss. Compress once from the best available source whenever possible.

CHECK BEFORE USE

Check before compressing

01

Format and dimensions stay

The output keeps the original format and pixel dimensions.

02

Original kept when smaller

If compression produces a larger file, the original becomes the download result.

03

Metadata and orientation

Metadata is removed by default while image orientation is normalised into pixels.

04

Safe processing limits

Up to 10 files, 15 MB each, 50 MB total, and 30 million pixels per image.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01Are images uploaded to a server?+

No. Images are processed in your browser and are not sent to FIXLGS servers.

02Are image dimensions reduced?+

No. Only file size is reduced; pixel dimensions are preserved.

03Does the image format change?+

No. JPG remains JPG, PNG remains PNG, and WebP remains WebP.
