HOW TO USE

How to calculate sloped roof area

  1. 01

Enter the horizontal projection width and length.

  2. 02

Choose degrees, slope percent, or Rise:Run for the roof slope.

  3. 03

Enter a material allowance for cutting and overlap reference.

  4. 04

Review horizontal area, sloped length, and actual roof area.

  5. 05

Review the material reference area and formula, then copy if needed.

ANGLE

Normalize degrees, percent, and Rise:Run

Degrees are used directly, slope percent converts with atan(percent÷100), and Rise:Run converts with atan(rise÷run).

EXAMPLE 01

5 m × 10 m at 30°

Divide the 50 m² horizontal area by cos(30°) to get about 57.735 m². The sloped width is about 5.7735 m.

EXAMPLE 02

10% material allowance

Adding 10% to 57.735 m² gives a material reference area of about 63.509 m².

BOUNDARY

0° and near 90°

0° is a valid flat-roof branch. Near 90°, cos approaches zero and calculated area rises sharply, so the tool enforces a warning/error boundary.

PLANES

Calculate multiple roof planes separately

For gable or complex roofs with non-identical planes, do not treat one rectangular calculation as the whole roof. Calculate each plane from its own horizontal dimensions and slope, then add the actual areas.

ORDER

Separate reference area from purchase quantity

Allowance-adjusted area is a material comparison reference. Panels, tiles, and sheets have different dimensions, overlaps, cut directions, and package units, so convert the area again using the real product specification.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01What is the actual area of a 5 m × 10 m roof at 30°?+

The horizontal area is 50 m² and the actual area is 50 ÷ cos(30°), about 57.735 m².

02How is sloped length calculated?+

Divide the horizontal width by cos(slope angle). A 5 m width at 30° is about 5.7735 m.

03What angle is a 4:12 slope?+

atan(4÷12), or about 18.435°.

04How do I convert a 50% slope to degrees?+

Use atan(0.5), which is about 26.565°.
