DISCOUNT GUIDE

Stacked discounts multiply instead of simply adding

Each new discount uses the already discounted price, while total savings and effective discount stay anchored to the original price.
BASIC

Basic discount

Discount amount is original × rate, and final price is original minus that discount.

STACKED

Additional discount

20% then 10% applies 10% to the remaining 80%, leaving 72% and an effective 28% discount.

EFFECTIVE

Effective discount

Measure total savings against the original with 1 − final/original.

REVERSE

Find original

Use final ÷ (1 − rate/100) to recover the original price from a sale price and discount.

RATE

Find discount

Use (original − final) ÷ original × 100 when original and sale prices are known.

BOUNDARY

100% exception

A 100% discount makes the final price zero, but reverse-original calculation is undefined because its divisor is zero.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01How much do I save with 20% off?+

The discount amount is 20% of the original price, so the final price is 80% of the original.

02Is 30% off plus 10% off equal to 40%?+

No. 100 → 70 → 63, so the effective discount is 37%.

03Can I add the discount percentage back to get the original price?+

No. Reverse it with final price ÷ (1 − discount/100).

04Can I reverse a 100% discount?+

No. The divisor becomes zero, so the original price is undefined.

05Are discount amount and savings the same?+

They are the same for one discount. With stacked discounts, the first-step discount and total savings are different measures.
